Expert Evaluation & Treatment for Rotator Cuff Injuries in the South Bay

Understanding Rotator Cuff Pathology

The rotator cuff is essential for strength, stability, and smooth motion of the shoulder. When a tear occur whether from a fall, a sports injury, or gradual degeneration—it can severely limit your comfort and daily function. At Modern Orthopedics, we specialize in the comprehensive management of all forms of rotator cuff disease, from early inflammation to complex, multi-tendon tears.

Our approach is grounded in precision, modern imaging techniques, and a surgeon-led, concierge experience that prioritizes clear diagnosis and individualized treatment.

A rotator cuff tear occurs when one or more of the four muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder become damaged. Tears may be:

Partial-Thickness Tears

The tendon is frayed or weakened but not completely detached.

Full-Thickness Tears

The tendon detaches completely from the bone, often causing noticeable weakness and difficulty lifting the arm.

Degenerative Tears

Gradual wear over time, common in patients over 40 and active adults.

Traumatic Tears

Resulting from sudden injury, such as a fall or heavy lifting event.

Common Symptoms

  • Shoulder pain, especially at night

  • Weakness when lifting or reaching

  • Pain radiating down the upper arm

  • Difficulty performing overhead activities

  • Clicking or catching sensation

  • Loss of strength or endurance

If shoulder pain has persisted for more than two weeks—or if weakness appeared suddenly—an evaluation is recommended.

A Concierge-Level Diagnostic Experience

At Modern Orthopedics, every patient is evaluated directly by Dr. Barrett. We use high-resolution ultrasound or MRI to define the pattern of injury, assess tendon quality, and determine the most effective path to recovery.

Your evaluation includes:

  • Detailed physical examination

  • Review of prior imaging

  • In-office diagnostic ultrasound when appropriate

  • Clear explanation of the tear pattern and treatment options

You will leave the appointment with a complete, personalized plan.

Treatment Options

Rotator cuff tears do not all require surgery. We offer the full spectrum of modern treatment options.

Non-Surgical Care

For selected partial tears and degenerative disease:

  • Targeted physical therapy

  • Image-guided injections

  • Activity modification

  • Anti-inflammatory strategies

Many patients experience significant improvement without surgery.

Surgical Treatment

When surgery is indicated—typically for full-thickness tears, traumatic injuries, or persistent symptoms—Dr. Barrett performs minimally invasive arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using advanced anchor technology and tendon-preserving techniques.

Our surgical goals:

  • Restore tendon integrity

  • Rebuild biomechanical stability

  • Minimize postoperative pain

  • Accelerate functional recovery

We also treat complex patterns including retracted tears, massive tears, and revision repairs.

Recovery & Expectations

Most patients regain substantial function within several months, with continued improvements up to a year.

Typical recovery timeline:

  • 0–6 weeks: Protection & early motion

  • 6–12 weeks: Progressive strengthening

  • 3–6 months: Return to daily activities

  • 6–12 months: Full recovery for demanding activities

Every patient’s plan is customized to their anatomy, tendon quality, and goals.
